New flagship HR system to speed onboarding
Reading, UK, 3rd July 2013 – Sage People, the leader in Global Workforce Collaboration, today announced the World Maritime University (WMU) has chosen its Global Workforce Collaboration platform as it sets sail on the next part of its 30 year voyage to provide a global centre of excellence for maritime post-graduate education and research.
Founded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMU offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. post-graduate degrees in areas including maritime safety and environmental administration, maritime law and policy, maritime education and training, shipping and port management, and marine environmental and ocean management. As part of updating its key business systems, WMU opted for cloud-based applications such as Google Apps and salesforce.com. Following a year-long study, Sage People was selected as WMU’s enterprise HR solution, complementing other choices for finance, project management, and online course registrations.
Sage People’s immediate role will be to replace manual HR record keeping processes such as access to secure facilities, emergency contact details, pay increments, UN Laissez-Passer and contract renewals. All WMU personnel will be provided with self-service access to many HR functions and will be able to administer a portion of their own personal details.
WMU has a global workforce and a unique payroll system, involving a variety of currencies and differing needs in terms of benefits and staff evaluations. Human Resources Officer, Marco Batista comments, “Sage People is the app which will open the floodgates for us and help us tweak our HR processes. Where previously we manually administered a master file which determined who needed pay increases, ID cards and contract renewals, we can now give a workforce who expects a lot from HR exactly what they need.”
Erik Ponnert, WMU’s Enterprise Systems Manager & University Webmaster, advocated for a cautious roll-out approach. “We are in a process of renewal with multiple strategic international hires of faculty and staff in the last three years that have created an opportunity to standardize and roll out new systems over time, department by department. Our faculty and staff will appreciate how they are empowered as users over time. There is so much we can do that today’s plans are just the tip of the iceberg. We have also had some great discovery sessions with the Sage People team on future functionality.”
Additional benefits of the move to cloud-based workforce collaboration will come from Sage People’s social functions, including Chatter, to rapidly educate new starters about their colleagues’ expertise and to schedule leave calendars within teams.
